Overview
Modern buildings are increasingly optimised for efficiency, yet many continue to underperform for the people who inhabit them. With approximately 90% of life spent indoors for people in the developed world, improving the quality of interior environments represents one of the greatest opportunities to enhance human wellbeing while reducing the environmental burden of the built environment.
Across workplaces, educational facilities and public spaces, poor lighting, excessive noise and declining indoor air quality contribute to stress, fatigue, reduced concentration and diminished wellbeing. These challenges are typically addressed through separate systems - lighting, acoustic treatments, and air-quality interventions - adding complexity, material consumption and environmental burden. We believed there was an opportunity to rethink this approach.
Frame
At the most fundamental level, all life depends on light. Natural light shapes our landscapes, influences our wellbeing and underpins the systems that sustain life on Earth. Inspired by nature, we asked a simple question:
What if a light could do more than illuminate?
What if it could simultaneously improve how a space looks, sounds and feels, while contributing positively to both human and environmental wellbeing?
New Zealand produces one of the world's most remarkable natural performance materials: wool.
Intrinsically luminescent, naturally renewable, highly effective at absorbing sound, and capable of suppressing common indoor pollutants to purify air, wool possesses a unique warmth and softness that enriches interior environments. We believed this natural advantage could inspire an entirely new product category - one that combines illumination, acoustic comfort and environmental wellbeing within a single integrated system.
Our Approach
The result is Flora: a beautiful 3-in-1 acoustic pendant luminaire.
Flora incorporates a novel dual-layer acoustic chamber that integrates sound management directly into the pendant's architecture. Inspired by resonator and silencer technologies, the system uses a perforated inner chamber to separate and disrupt sound waves, improving attenuation across both low and high frequencies.
Tuned using principles similar to Helmholtz resonators, the chamber targets specific wavelengths to reduce reverberation and improve speech intelligibility. Combined with the natural absorptive properties of wool, the result is a highly effective broadband acoustic solution achieving Gold Standard NRC ratings of 0.70 and 0.90 - delivering exceptional acoustic comfort while maintaining a refined architectural form.
Its sculptural three-dimensional form and soft organic contours evoke living forms, creating a calming presence that inspired its name: Flora.
Nested within this acoustic and purifying structure is a slim-profile LED luminaire which deliberately contrasts to the softness of the surround - the yin to wool's yang. A micro-prismatic optical system delivers high-quality, low-glare illumination, while integrated uplighting contributes to Green Building wellness objectives.
Flora's simple clip-together design enables rapid assembly, efficient installation and reduced transport volume, lowering both logistical complexity and environmental impact.
Outcome
Flora transforms a traditional light fitting into an integrated environmental wellbeing system.
More than a beautiful object, Flora creates greater value for occupants, architects and building owners while reducing complexity, material use and environmental impact.
For users, Flora contributes to healthier and more comfortable indoor environments through low-glare lighting, acoustic absorption and the natural air-purifying. Together, these features support wellbeing, concentration and the overall user experience.
For clients, Flora delivers measurable sustainability and building-performance outcomes while supporting Green Building and WELL objectives. Its selection for the redevelopment of Wellington Central Library, Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui, demonstrates its relevance and significance in architecture.
For our shared Natural Environment, Flora helps reduce environmental burden of modern buildings through lower carbon emissions, reduced resource consumption, circular material flows. It achieves more with less - creating better outcomes for both people and the planet.
Beyond the product itself, Flora is a genuine New Zealand design story. Developed through local expertise spanning wool production, lighting engineering, advanced manufacturing, industrial design and architectural integration, it demonstrates how New Zealand ideas, materials and capability can be transformed into high-value products with global potential while contributing to a more regenerative and sustainable future.
